Bus Drivers: Passengers, Put Down Your Phones

來源: 時間:2016-05-27

Bus drivers in Jinan, capital city of east China’s Shandong Province, have recently launched a campaign to alert people to the harms of phone addiction and encourage them to have more real-life interactions with people around them.

The drivers put on doll outfits and imitated the numerous phone addicts they witness every day, in the hope that passengers would take note and make changes to their mobile-addict behavior.

"The distance between life and death is not the furthest in the world; and yet, when I’m with you, you are absorbed in your cellphone."

It has become a common feeling among many Chinese. On public transport—buses and subways across the country—few passengers could keep their hand off their cellphones and instead have a chat or interaction with people around them.

Social apps such as Weibo (the Chinese version of Twitter) and WeChat have gone too far to become an indispensable part of daily life, and many people are impatient enough that they check these apps the moment they wake up.

Many seniors have voiced their concern over the situation—after a long day of hard work, people should relax and unwind by avoiding activities involving excessive use of their eyes, hands and minds. The vast majority of the public, however, have been over-occupied by their phones including on public vehicles where many accidents tend to happen and cause harm.

On buses that are more often than not overcrowded in China, people lost in the virtual mobile world leave themselves easy targets of thieves. Some miss their bus or insert their purse or other things into the fare box, whilst others miss their stop or even fall over—all because they are completely absorbed in their mobile phones.

Such long periods of time spent on a cellphone can cause significant harm to the neck, as revealed by an experiment conducted by a recent program on China Central Television (CCTV). When a person bows his head by 45 degrees, his neck bears a pressure of 1.85kg, 3.7 times higher than the normal level; when it spans to 60 degrees, the amount of pressure is 4.5 times higher.

While phone addiction can bring about much loss and harm, it is worth also mentioning the negative social impact it has on communication and interaction. According to recent surveys and reports, phone addiction has become the No.1 killer of marriages. Friendship and relationships have been adversely impacted as well, since many people have significantly decreased their face-to-face interactions with people around while being distracted by the virtual but truly harmful mobile world.

Hopefully, efforts of the Jinan bus drivers will pay off and the public will be enlightened to make some sort of change.
